FATAL FLAW Xu Shu's lack of self-belief is his fatal flaw. It ultimately lies beneath most of his weak points and is the sole reason he doesn't start the series already in the service of a chosen warlord; even when intrigued by one who might be able to end the chaos, or even just bring some measure of peace to a part of the land, his lack of self-belief holds him back. Canon points out in many variations of the story that he never attains the high position his gifts should place him in because of this. The only variants where he overcomes this to any degree is when circumstance or the advice/aid of another pushes back against this side of himself. His greatest gift is his intelligence, and his compassion drives him to do good with that gift, but this can be undermined way too easily by the part of him that constantly insists that he simply isn't good enough. Without this trait Xu Shu would be able to do more, change more, be the compassionate force for change he wants to be; that he's not is something of a tragedy. Challenging that in this setting is a long-term goal... be that for a positive or negative change, we shall see.

ABOUT Xu Shu, styled 'Yuanzhi' (a name for only those close to him to use), as played in Fasti by Bell. A kind-hearted but troubled strategist drawn into Rome shortly after his first major battle in Cao Cao's service, he seeks to aid the battle against the titans whilst protecting as many of his fellow 'Chosen' as possible... which might be a difficult task. Maybe, along the way, he can also find a place for himself in the world and fight against his own self-doubts.
